The Classic 25/5 Pomodoro Timer
The exact ratio Francesco Cirillo used when he invented the technique — still the best default for most people.
Why 25 minutes, specifically?
Cirillo picked 25 minutes largely because that's what his tomato-shaped kitchen timer happened to be set to — but the number has survived for a reason. It's long enough to genuinely sink into a task, and short enough that your attention rarely wanders before the break arrives. Jumping straight into 50 or 90-minute blocks is a common reason people abandon the technique in the first week; 25/5 is the version that's actually sustainable for daily use.
How this page is set up
This page has already loaded the timer with 25 minutes of focus, 5 minutes of short break, and a 15-minute long break every four cycles — the original proportion, with nothing to configure in Settings. Add one or two concrete tasks to the session plan, press start, and let the animated background and ambient sound handle the rest. After each pomodoro, log which task you made progress on; over time that builds into your stats and focus streak.
When to consider longer sessions
If 25 minutes consistently feels too short — if the bell rings right as you're finally getting into flow — that's a reasonable signal to try 50-minute sessions with a 10-minute break, aimed at deeper, more sustained work. You can switch durations at any time from Settings without losing any of your existing progress.
Why this Pomodoro is different
- ⏱️ The exact ratio Cirillo used originally, loaded and ready — no setup needed on your end
- 📋 A real session plan for logging tasks and estimated pomodoros, not just a countdown
- 🎨 An animated background running the moment you land, not a blank timer screen
- ⌨️ Completed pomodoros feed the same streak and badges as the rest of the site
- 🆓 No sign-up needed to use it — an account only adds cross-device syncing later
Compared to a generic Pomodoro timer
| Feature | MecanografíaPro | Generic timer |
|---|---|---|
| Ratio on arrival | Already set to the original 25/5 | Usually needs manual setup first |
| Background while you work | A real animated scene, not a blank screen | Typically nothing, or a static color |
| Session plan | Tasks with estimated pomodoros | Just the timer, no planning layer |
| Progress tracking | Streak and badges shared site-wide | Every session starts from zero |
| Switching to longer sessions | One click to a 50/10-style preset, nothing lost | Manually reconfigure the minutes yourself |
Frequently asked questions
Is 25/5 the "correct" way to do Pomodoro?
It's the original ratio, but not a strict rule — it's simply the best default for most people starting out. Once you know how your own focus behaves, adjusting the durations to fit your work is completely normal and expected.
What happens after four pomodoros?
The break automatically switches to a longer one — 15 minutes by default in this preset — to help you recover from the accumulated fatigue of several sessions in a row, exactly as the original technique recommends.
Do I need a paid plan to use the 25/5 timer?
No, the timer and its durations are free for everyone. Paid plans only unlock additional static background photos and premium ambient tracks — never the timer itself.
Can I use this for work, not just studying?
Absolutely — the 25/5 ratio is popular for any kind of focused work, from writing and coding to admin tasks, not just studying.
