Pomodoro Timer — free, online, no sign-up
The classic focus technique, loaded and ready to go, with tools most bare-bones timers skip entirely.
What the Pomodoro Technique actually is
The Pomodoro Technique is a simple idea: work in focused 25-minute blocks separated by short breaks, with a longer break every four rounds. It was created in the late 1980s by Francesco Cirillo, who named it after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used at the time. Decades later it's still one of the most recommended focus methods, mostly because it removes the pressure of an open-ended work session and replaces it with a series of short, clearly bounded sprints.
What makes this timer different from a bare countdown
Most free Pomodoro timers online are exactly that: a countdown and nothing else. This one loads with an animated live background running on canvas (not a static photo), a built-in ambient sound library so you don't need a separate music tab, and a session plan where you can list your actual tasks and estimate how many pomodoros each one needs. It also connects to the rest of your typing practice progress on this site, so your focus streak and your typing streak build on the same history.
Getting started
You don't need to touch a single setting to start: add a task or two to the session plan, hit start, and let the background and ambient sound do the rest. Once you've got a feel for how long you can actually hold focus, it's worth trying the dedicated 25/5 preset page or a longer, deep-work-oriented option — both are one click away, and switching never resets your stats.
Why this Pomodoro is different
- ⏱️ Loads with the original 25/5 ratio Cirillo used — nothing to configure before your first session
- 📋 A built-in session plan for listing tasks and estimating pomodoros, not just a bare countdown
- 🎨 A real animated background from the moment you land, instead of a blank screen with a number
- ⌨️ Every completed pomodoro counts toward the same streak and badges as the rest of the site
- 🆓 No sign-up needed to try it — a free account only adds cross-device syncing later on
Compared to a generic Pomodoro timer
| Feature | MecanografíaPro | Generic timer |
|---|---|---|
| Duration on arrival | Already set to 25/5, the original ratio | Usually defaults to whatever was last used, or nothing |
| Background while you work | A real animated scene out of the box | Typically a blank screen or a solid color |
| Session plan | Tasks with estimated pomodoros, not just a countdown | Usually just the timer |
| Progress tracking | Streak and badges shared across the whole site | Every session starts from zero |
| Cost to try | Free, no sign-up needed | Varies — some require an account up front |
Frequently asked questions
Is this Pomodoro timer really free?
Yes. The timer itself, the session plan, one live animated background and one ambient sound track are all available with no account and no payment. Some additional backgrounds and clock skins unlock through use or through a paid plan, but the core timer works fully from the first minute.
Do I need to create an account to use it?
No, you can use the timer without signing up. Creating a free account only adds cross-device syncing for your streak, stats and unlocked badges — it's entirely optional.
Can I change the focus and break durations?
Yes, at any time from the settings icon you can set the focus and break durations to whatever minutes you prefer — the 25/5 ratio is just the starting point when you land on this page.
Does the timer work if I switch tabs?
Yes, the countdown and any ambient sound keep running in the background. If a focus session finishes while you're on another tab, the browser tab title updates to let you know as soon as you come back.
